A Saucerful of Secrets

Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Galería ATC is pleased to announce the one-person exhibition A Saucerful of Secrets by the Italian artist Siro Cugusi. The opening reception will take place on Friday, May 17, 2019 at 8pm, at Calle Callao de Lima, 39, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, and will remain open to the public until July 31, 2019. In A Saucerful of Secrets , the artist exhibits ten oil paintings on canvas, created between 2017 and 2018, that explore landscapes and the tension between the figurative and the abstract.
In his works, Cugusi introduces figures in mountains and seaside scenes that recall classical Italian painters such as Piero della Francesca and Masaccio in which figures appear in the foreground and occupy most of the canvas. In order to create tension, the artist employs Surrealist and biomorphic figures, celebrating the natural and organic life, the mineral world, plants, animals, and parts of the human body. In the artist’s words: they are “figures that no longer correspond to the names we gave them”. By painting undefined figures, which participate in many worlds, without hierarchies, the artist's contemporaneità emerges along with his resistance to the imperious actions of identification and classification.
With Cugusi, painting is seduction. As Louise Bourgeois observed, in the creation of beauty, "seduction is a way of convincing". Beauty, thus understood, has more to do with the experience of form than with form itself as an object. His painting is instinctive, of direct perception and spontaneous feelings, which coexist with its other more constrained nature of reflection. It is in the act of painting where the modification of the form is carried out with the purpose of seducing. The result is an uncontrollable beauty, of attractive non-specific figures.
