Fantastica explores Italian art from the first twenty-five years of the 21st century through the works of fifty-four male and female artists born between the 1960s and the late 1990s. Each was invited to follow one of five curatorial paths identified by Luca Massimo Barbero, Francesco Bonami, Emanuela Mazzonis di Pralafera, Francesco Stocchi, and Alessandra Troncone. In Barbero’s section, the thematic starting point is self-portraiture—specifically, the possibility of choosing how we represent ourselves or what to be represented by. The interest lies not so much in the myth of Narcissus, but rather in Jean Cocteau’s Orpheus, where the mirror becomes not a physical object that reflects an image, but a threshold between two communicating worlds.
